Nuns walk into a church

May 2018 Naples, Italy The photo depicts nuns as they enter a church. Someone put on the stairs leading up the church “j’existe” French for “I exist.”

Anti-Islamization party activists

February 2018 Milan, Italy The photo captures anti-Islamization party activists speaking to people outside in piazza Cordusio in Milan, Italy. The poster reads “in defense of Italian culture.” Ironically, this is where the first and only Starbucks in all of Italy opened only a few months later.

Children ask questions at mosque

April 2018 Milan, Italy The photo captures an event in the Milan mosque educating children about Islam. One child said that another Catholic child told him that if he ate pork, even accidentally, he would no longer be Muslim. Questions such as these were incredibly interesting to my research investigating social boundary-making through food.

UPS delivery man in Venice

November 2017 Venice, Italy The photo captures a UPS delivery man sending Made in Italy packages and the challenges a city on the water poses to normal everyday activities. The “fragile glass” refers the famous glass from Murano, an island in Venice

May 2018 Naples, Italy The photo captures a man as he reads in his car. Cars are more than machines to get from place to place. Cars are also parked and used to hangout, talk to friends, and smoke cigarettes.

Man cooks horsemeat

August 2018 Catania, Italy The photo depicts a street vendor as he cooks up horsemeat in Catania. In Sicily few homes have gas instead they use “bombola” or gas cylinders to cook in their homes. This photo was taken in the Plebiscito neighborhood, a historic informal settlement area famous for its meat vendors. I was in Catania to learn about the Food Italy office located there.

Boiled Octopus

September 2018 Palermo, Italy The photo depicts boiled octopus served for breakfast at the Ballaro’ Market. The Ballaro’ market is one of the oldest and most famous markets in Italy. I was in Palermo to see the Ballaro’ market and talk to vendors about where they source their goods for a short weekend after spending the week in the offices of Food Italy in Catania, Sicily.
